ACTION ON BOGUS OFFICIALS

Police in Horsham and Steyning have launched Operation Secure to reduce the number of crimes committed by cruel bogus callers who prey on the elderly and vulnerable.

The campaign also aims to remove the fear of becoming a victim of "distraction burglaries" in the Horsham district.

These involve people posing as "officials" to con their way into homes, or offering to do building work, or even children claiming something has been lost in or around the victim's home.

An interactive door security device called Minder will be given to those victims of such crimes, but they can also be purchased at the cost of £15.00.

Alan Haffenden, crime prevention officer, said, "What we ask neighbours to do is o keep a lookout for their vulnerable neighbours and if they see any strangers at their door to popover and report anything suspicious to the police."

The operation was officially launchd at a meeting at Crawley Police station, attended by more than 30 Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinators.

A video made by the West Sussex Trading Standards callled "Think twice" was also shown to give advice about how to avoid these crimes.

TRADESMAN'S DIRECTORY

Several Neighbourhood Watch groups in Horsham have compiled a list of local tradesmen that other members have used and would recommed to others. This is particulary useful to the elderly and those living alone. This list is in no way an indication that the names and companies mentioned have been given Police Approval. The list has been compiled for the use of Neighbourhood Watch members ony in the Horsham Sector of North Downs Division and are recommendations only from exsisting NHW members who have knowledge of work done. The tradesmen concerned are always asked first if they would be willing to be on such a list.

Dear Colleagues

This message is being sent out to all NHW Coordinators highlighting the national publicity on the UK Crime map site.

People across Sussex will now be able to see what crime and antisocial behaviour (ASB) is happening on their streets, thanks to new information published today via www.police.uk. By typing in a postcode, people can immediately see what crime and ASB has happened in their area and are given ways to contact their local policing team. They can also see what their team is doing to make their area safer.

Chief Constable Martin Richards said: “Sussex Police has today joined-up with all other police forces in England and Wales to launch a new tool that will help communities to better understand what’s happening on their streets.

“By making this information available, we aim to raise awareness of what we’re doing to tackle crime and disorder and how local people can support their local police.

"This new technology will allow us to provide more relevant information to the community. In addition to information about crime and antisocial behaviour, we hope to have updates on the activities and actions of Neighbourhood Policing officers and news stories from their areas."

The online map will allow residents to view figures for all crime as well as burglary, robbery, violence, vehicle crime, other crime and anti-social behaviour in their area at the touch of a button. Contact details and feedback channels for local policing teams, local policing priorities, crime prevention advice and information about forthcoming local events such as beat meetings will also be published to the site. Research published by the National Policing Improvement Agency shows people trust local police information, especially the combination of crime maps and local crime information. It also challenges the myth that sharing such information with the public increases fear of crime.

The new site was developed by the National Policing Improvement Agency on behalf of the Home Office and involved close collaboration between all 43 police forces in England and Wales.

To see the new website, go to www.police.uk.

Please note that the street mapping figures show abnormally high numbers of anti-social behaviour incidents being recorded at two sites - Bolnore Road, Haywards Heath and Church Lane, Lewes, both of which are main call handling centres where 999 and non-emergency calls are received.

Sussex Police has been thorough in its recording and these high figures relate to hoax calls - mainly received by mobile phone - which have been recorded at those sites because there was no alternative geographical location. They do not relate to disproportionate levels of crime or anti-social behaviour in those local areas.

The Force is awaiting advice from the NPIA as to how they wish us to record these types of incidents in the future to avoid any confusion and so that they can be readily compared to other areas.

Please do not select reply to this message. In case of emergency always dial 999. For all other enquiries call 0845 6070999 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting      0845 6070999end_of_the_skype_highlighting or report non-emergency crimes or incidents online:

Young achievers award

A fifteen year old whose work with the Horsham Neighbourhood Watch Scheme has helped reduce crime in the area has been praised for his help.

David helped update the NHW website, and was thanked for his work by Horsham District commander Chief Inspector Sally Simmonds, schools liason officer PC Andy Skinner and crime prevention officer Linda Connor. David was presented with a certificate at his school in a special assembly. David received a round of applause from his friends as he collected his certificate.

David was praised for helping to boost the Horsham NHW website which is run by his mother. Mrs Connor said the pages now looked more colourful and interesting.

She added "He has learnt something to take back into school."

David said "My Mum is the co-ordinator for our street as well as the web master. The website was rather embarrasing, plain and unexciting. I just wanted to brighten it up." David continues to work with his Mum updating the site.

PC Skinner commented: "This is an outstanding example of citizenship in the school and is the really nice positive side of young people."

Mike Lewis, head of year 11 at David's school said,"We are thrilled with his contribution and the time he gave up to do this."
