ACTION ON BOGUS OFFICIALSPolice in Horsham and Steyning have launched Operation Secure to reduce the number of crimes committed by cruel bogus callers who prey on the elderly and vulnerable. The campaign also aims to remove the fear of becoming a victim of "distraction burglaries" in the Horsham district. These involve people posing as "officials" to con their way into homes, or offering to do building work, or even children claiming something has been lost in or around the victim's home. An interactive door security device called Minder will be given to those victims of such crimes, but they can also be purchased at the cost of £15.00. Alan Haffenden, crime prevention officer, said, "What we ask neighbours to do is o keep a lookout for their vulnerable neighbours and if they see any strangers at their door to popover and report anything suspicious to the police." The operation was officially launchd at a meeting at Crawley Police station, attended by more than 30 Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinators. A video made by the West Sussex Trading Standards callled "Think twice" was also shown to give advice about how to avoid these crimes. |

She added "He has learnt something to take back into school." David said "My Mum is the co-ordinator for our street as well as the web master. The website was rather embarrasing, plain and unexciting. I just wanted to brighten it up." David continues to work with his Mum updating the site. PC Skinner commented: "This is an outstanding example of citizenship in the school and is the really nice positive side of young people." North Downs Division - Neighbourhood Watch Conference Held on Saturday 12th May 2007 At Maidenbower Community Centre. Around 80 Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinators from the North Downs Policing Division gathered together with police staff, police community support officers and police officers for the Neighbourhood Watch Conference on Saturday 12th May. Superintendent Wayne Jones opened the Conference with a review of the past year and the challenges the Division faced ahead. During the year 2005/6 there had been: 254 more detections 574 fewer crimes 158 fewer burglaries 170 fewer vehicles being broken into 69 fewer robberies 139 fewer criminal damages 157 more public place violent crime He highlighted the measures that the Division had made in looking after the vulnerable members of society such as the establishment of the Neighbourhood Watch Search Team, no cold calling zones and street briefings. A presentation was then given by PC Andy Skinner, Schools Liaison Officer who highlighted the work that he does in schools and emphasised that a lot of young people have a lot to offer and their lives should be celebrated. Sergeant Jim Sharpe gave a presentation on the Retail Crime Diversion Programme which educates young people who have committed shop-lifting. The programme highlights to the offender the effect of their behaviour on the retailer and how having a criminal record can affect their life in the future. It also shows the business community that the police take this crime seriously and hopefully it stops young people from re-offending. Delegates then divided into their area groups and were addressed by their local Neighbourhood Support Team officers and questions were answered. There was then a final question and answer session in which questions were put to the speakers. |
